Selenium is required for the synthesis of the antioxidant glutathione peroxidase. It is also important cofactor (iodine activator) in thyroid function. Other plants containing Selenium are Astalagus (Fabaceae), Stanleya (Brassicales), Xylorhiza and Oonopsis (both Asteraceae).

Ericales - Summary The theme of the Ericaceae is suppression of movement which results in coldness and lethargy. In the mental and emotional spheres this produces indifference and even hatered. This theme is continued in the Primulaceae and goes further, tending towards lameness and paralysis which results in stasis on every level. Being on the move, either mentally or physically is exciting and exhilarating. When one cannot move yet the impulse is there we see trembling and shaking. By analogy, trembling and shaking in the mental sphere produces such a state of irritability that they fear of loss of control, e.g. impulses to kill. The Theaceae share this characteristic.
