Gelsemium sempervirens

Farrington: It (paralysis) acts upon the cerebro-spinal system, particularly upon the anterior columns of the cord. We also see that, by producing this sluggishness of thought, this stupid state of the mind, it must have an action on the vascular system. It is through the vaso-motor nerves that it produces passive congestion, which may be either venous or arterial.

Some important red dyes are obtained from this family.

Ipecacuanha (Ipecac Root)

Farrington: Ip. has an affinity with the mucous membranes of the bronchial tubes and alimentary canal.
Ipecacuanha contains as its active principle a substance called Emetin, which gives to the drug its property of producing vomiting. It also contains Ipecacuanhic acid which may have an effect on the pneumogastric nerve, (implicated in asthma).
Image: The Ip. state has an "unfortunate" feeling. Very hard to please. You get boredom and discontentment along with the Rubiacae desire for stimulation, which kicks off all sorts of longings ... Desires numerous. Ip. never stops thinking "The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence!"
This is a characteristic of the Typhoid Miasm.

China (Cinchone - Peruvian Bark)

Farrington: Cinchona contains a number of isomeric Quinine alkaloids (C20H2N2O2).
The effects resemble cholera: Soon nausea and vomiting appear, and even diarrhoea may be added to the gastric disturbances. Then the head becomes affected. There is a peculiar sensitiveness to external impressions, to noises, to bright lights or to anything that is apt to render the patient irritable.
There is experienced a peculiar form of headache, which is characterized by dull aching and at other times by throbbing in the head. There are well-marked ringing or roaring sounds in the ears, a very characteristic effect of Cinchona. Vertigo still further complicates the case.
If the use of the drug is still persisted in, deafness follows. In extreme cases collapse and death from paralysis of the heart end the patient's life.
Hahnemann has taught us that Cinchona is useful only when debility or anaemia comes from loss of fluids,(e.g. haemorrhage, diarrhoea or even sexual excess).

Image: China seems to be like a deeper progression of Ip. (above).
The China state is sensitive to beauty and these people are usually artistic, philosophical or spiritual. Their sensitivy is delicate, and soon becomes irritation. The least noise is painful e.g. Tinnitus. The room looks too bright.

Reconstruction from rubrics:

They are very deep, and superficial conversation is almost painful. Sentences can be broken in a rush of mixed up words and ideas. They would rather write you a poem:

  • Thoughts: Disconnected. Vanishing. Rushing. Persistant. In verses.

The world seems threatening in this delicate state. When harrassed they become 'gaurded against persecution', and quite likely to become agrophobic.
  • Delusions, persecuted; pursued by enimies; tormented; Escapes, attempts to.
  • Fear: Dogs, people, falling, evil, killing, being pitied.
When short tempered, they go off at the sligtest offence. The rage is to be avoided!
  • Cruelty: Kill, Malicious. dictatorial, domineering, dogmatical, despotic.
  • Anger - inclined to vex others; caressing from [both unique]
  • Answer, aversion to; refuses to.
There is clarity, lots of ideas, ambition, and the ability to plan.
  • Fancies, exaltation of;

The person needing China may live in an "ivory castle" ... their plans don't often translate into actions (Feeling bloked - Rajan's case (Plants. I) brings out the aspect crippling dependancy).
When the romantic vision fails to materialise a state of indifference and apathy sets in.

  • Wants to drink and let the world go to hell.
  • Anxiety, weary of life, with; trifles; future about; conscience of. > Indifference, periodical.
  • Inconsolable; > Suicidal, fear of death, with.
  • Cheerful, shouting; desires to be; alt sadness. > Lascivious. Obscene, lewd.
  • Confusion, dream, as if in. Dullness a.m.; dreams after.
Miasm: Malaria. A small person vs. the world?

Therapeutics: Cholera, chills, fever.

Sensation: Hinderance.

Rubiaceae: When Sensitivity and Joy turn into misery.

Galium Aparine

Mishas Proving: The key sensation of the remedy would seem to be one of being overwhelmed. This would be in keeping with the signature of the substance as a fast growing weed that soon overwhelms the area in which it grows and with the clinical evidence of its efficacy in treating cancers, which would place it in a cancerous miasm. The sensation of being overwhelmed was found clearly in the mental and emotional pictures, in dreams, particularly of overwhelming responsibility. This was often externalised as a feeling of being harassed or plagued both internally and externally. There was a sense of anxiety, particularly an anxiety that something was about to happen. Part of this anxiety was found in visions of death and violence.

Coffea Cruda (Arabica)

Farrington: Its alkaloid, Caffeine, is identical chemically with several others, such as Theine, the active principle of tea, and is related chemically to the purin bodies, xanthin, uric acid, etc. Caffeine lessens the amount of urea excreted in the urine.
The senses are all too acute under Coffea, not only the sense of touch but that of sight and of hearing also. An increased "excite-motor" action explains many of its symptoms. Violent emotions, whether of pleasure or of pain produce symptoms. Patients experience sudden joy, and they are at once sick from the excitement, ( e.g. apoplectic congestion).
This state can be reversed, the pulse increases at first then there is cardiac depression with palpitation and an irregular pulse. The heart is weakened.

Traits: Sensitive and mentally overactive. Theorizing. Quick, rushing Ideas. Acting before thinking. This excited state may be brought on by Father Christmas - aliments from joy, (Anja Heij).
  • Activity, creative. > mental, midnight until

Also has a sense of beauty, and (over)sensitivity.
  • Despair from pain.

They can labour for a good cause untill breakdown. The anger or the Rubiacea can be dangerous in the Coffea case:
  • Anger, violent. > Anger, throws things away. > Death, thoughts of, fear, without. > Delusions, paradise he, saw. UNIQUE .
There can be remorse (the morning after?)
Miasm: Leprosy.

Mitchella

Proovers started off with a feeling of dullness, heaviness and depresssion, which passed and developed into a feeling of buoyancy.
  • Cheerful, (gay, mirthful).
  • Dullness, (sluggishness, difficulty of thinking).
  • Sadness, (despondency, dejection, depression). Sighing.
Therapeutics: Persistent haemorrhage with frequent desire for urination. American Indians used it to ensure easy labour.

Pausinystalia yohimbe

Yohimbine HCL is the principal Alkaloid (an Indole) found in the bark of the tree. In Africa, yohimbine has traditionally been used as an aphrodisiac.
One side-effect is anxiety. In higher doses there can be rapid heart rate, high blood pressure, and overstimulation. It causes insomnia and sleeplessness. It has been used in the treatment of PTSD by inducing flashbacks in a controlled environment to reduce the numbing of responsivness and emotional constriction.

Mitragyna speciosa (Kratom)

It has psychoactive effects and contains some of the alkaloids found in Cinchona. It also contains 7-hydroxymitragynineis which is strucurally related to Yohimbine.
Kratom is considered an inexpensive alterntive to Opium by Thai users. They report that it can produce stimulation or relexation depending on the dose. At high doses it seems to be a sedative and an analgesic.

Its relative, Mitragyana stipulosa is listed under: Skin - eruptions - leprosy.

Psychotria viridis

Yet another ethenogen, containing DMT; used with Ayahusca to provide "light" (Wikipeida!).

Gentianales - Summary

Following on from the theme of excitement, clarity and exhilaration we found on the positive side of the Eriacles we also find clarity and beautiful visions in the Apocyanaceiae and the Rubiaceae.
The Gelsemiaceae are very sensitive to emotional stress. Under stress they are completely helpless.
In the Loganaceae there is serenity and sensitivity. The reaction to overstimulation is shock and a feeling of being shattered (Sankaran, Plants, P 1309). As in the Ericales, the overall result is a feeling of helplessness or paralysis (plants in this family contiain strychnine).
In the Rubiaceae we see this state of mental activity clearly in Coffea and China, where there are many visions, ideas and aspirations.
It is a sensitive and delicate state of mind. The polarity, arising from over-stimulation (Sankaran, Plants, p.472) is exhaustion and dullness.
The theme running through the entire Order is delicacy and sensitivity.
